Taxonomic reclassification

Unnamed varieties

Ella was pointing out some of the different ways of “naming” unnamed varieties. They are currently getting values such “No information”, “No name”, “Unnamed”, “Unknown”.

My first thought was that we should delete all such useless values.

Then I wondered, perhaps we need to distinguish between at least cases of unknown:

  1. We know it hasn’t been given a name
  2. We don’t know if it has a name or not

Maybe other cases too, such as we just haven’t got round to checking as much as we should. Is there a standard logical way to handle different types of missing value?

I suppose you may want to distinguish between "un-named" (we know that there was no name given), and "unknown name" (there may be a name and we don't know it). I don't think that introducing a 3rd category "no naming information", which would reduce the scope of the 2nd category, would help.

I even don't know whether distinguishing between "un-named" and "unknown name" is helpful, unless at some stage you want to invest some effort in finding names and you don't want to waste resources in the "un-named" category. If you try to link germplasm information from different sources, the "un-named" category may also help in reducing the number of possible matching combinations.

Do we have a frequency table on how often the different "unknown" codes apprear in the data? Looking at the frequencies might make the decision a bit easier.
