ENTERING HISTORICAL PEDIGREES INTO IRIS
Frequently pedigree information is available for lines which one wants to evaluate or use as parents. When the number of new lines is not too large these can be entered interactively in SETGEN
Exercise: Enter pedigrees for the following lines into IRIS DESIGNATION CROSS OR SOURCE LOCATION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ X8971B-15 Rough/4*IR72 Indonesia NewRice SPR85163-5-1-2-4 Thailand (Rel 2003) Y1123-b-pk-3-4-6 KKN77140-1-2-3/IR66154-521-2-2 Philippines
Procedure:
- Open SETGEN and create a new list with title NEWLINES
- Select the + button
- Enter the cross name ‘X8971B’ in the DESIGNATION field and click OK
- In the Name Information for New Entry Screen the name type ‘Cross name’ is correct, click the <Change button and set the country to Indonesia, clear the date field (since we don’t know the date of the cross) and select the method 107 – backcross. Then click OK.
- In the External Pedigree Input Tool Window enter the cross string Rough/4*IR72 in the cross box, clear the date and click OK. SETGEN searches for the parents and requests the user to select them if they are found otherwise it adds them as unknown derivatives. SETGEN then adds the cross to the list.
- Select the + button again and add the –15 to the designation. Accept the name type ‘Derivative name’ and the method ’Single Plant Selection’, clear the date and click OK. SETGEN adds the selection.
- Select the + button again. Enter the name ‘NewRice’ in the designation. Click OK.
- In the Name Information for New Entry Screen select ‘Release Name” from the pull down list of name types. Set the date to 2003 and the method to ‘Cultivar Release -326’. Set the date to 2003 and click OK.
- In the External Pedigree Input Tool Window enter SPR85163-5-1-2-4 in the source field. Enter 2003 in the date field. Click OK.
- For the last example use similar steps to enter first the cross Y1123 and then the derivative line Y1123-b-pk-3-4-6.
