GRIMS Characterization

Characterization is an important operation for any genebank, since the value of the genebank collection is heavily dependent on the amount of available information about the germplasms in the collection. Conserved materials are characterized to distinguish varieties and to facilitate preliminary selection of germplasm by end-users. Morphological and agronomic characters are recorded using coded qualitative scores, while a range of molecular markers are used for the classification of germplasms used in diversity studies. The Characterization module involves the systematic data management of observed morphological and agronomic traits, as well as reactions to biotic and abiotic stresses, of germplasms in the International Rice Genebank Collection. This module also handles planting material selection, seed stock requests, plot number assignment, planted sample monitoring, report generation, and label printing.
